Review- Until I Saw Your Smile

Until I Saw Your SmileUntil I Saw Your Smile by J.J. Murray

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was provided a copy of Until I Saw Your Smile from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First, let me say that to the best of my knowledge, this is the first story I’ve read that comes solely from the man’s POV, which added a nice refreshing twist.

The beginning of the story starts out with the main character Matthew going on a series of bad-hilariously bad dates after his girlfriend of a year leaves him. He then finds himself sharing the previous nights adventures with Angela, a coffee shop owner. Of course we see where it’s going quickly; but there are all sorts of twist and bumps along the way.

I loved the beginning of the book. I laughed, then reread passages so that I could laugh again and then even started telling my co-workers and husband about the things I was reading. About midway through, the tone turned more serious and although I liked the direction it took, there were a few things that drew me away from the story. The funny internal dialogue I liked so much turned a little obtrusive and didn’t let the story unfold smoothly for me. There was also an overload of information a few times that I could have done without. Lastly, there were a couple of instances of “that would never happen” that got to me. However, I was happy to see the author addressed his lack of knowledge relating to law at the end of the book. It may not be a big deal to most (I personally work in the profession so I caught it quickly.) But we also have to remember this is fiction and keep in mind that some things just can’t stay true to real life. Overall I liked the story very much. I feel it deserves 3.5 stars.
